COVID 19 DATA CHALLENGE

In partnership with the Border Solutions Alliance and the UC San Diego’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies program, the West Hub presented a new COVID-19 Data Challenge that featured three dozen faculty members and 33 teams, where a quarter of participants were in high school, a third were based in Mexico, and nearly half identified as women. Teams pitched data science driven solutions to the challenge question, “How can we confidently and transparently decide what is safe [for communities hit by COVID-19 along the U.S.-Mexico border]?” across various categories: School and Work, Retail and Leisure, Cross-Border, and High-School participants only. The challenge was hosted virtually and held live events for Kickoff, Lightning Talks, Team Matching, Office Hours, a Pitch Competition, and the final Awards Ceremony.
